Silence

There is a silence that sometimes rolls over me like a wave. Tonight, standing on a rooftop overlooking a dessert, it found me. Surrounded by Barbed wire and large concrete walls, with guard towers at every corner, I could see the light from the airport just a quarter mile away. The airport that will, in just over 30 days, take me back to a different world. Standing in the dry heat, as the sun set, smoking a cigar and listening to James Tailor’s Walking Man, I dreamt of a new life where I will wake every morning beside the one I love in a home we have built together, leaving my M4 and possibly my Glock behind as I trade my cargo pants and armor plates for a suit and tie, taking the train to work in a new city, and reading the newspaper beside other commuters who have never felt this heat or called for air support after an explosion while helping others get back to their homes and families far away from the heat and the dust that has been a part of my life for so long. I know that its time to go home, now that I have found one, and I know I will, but in this quiet moment that time seems as far away as the airport, just beyond my reach.

Thanks for stopping by.
